CampEasy rents equipped campervans from its Keflavík location for self-drive travel in Iceland. The important question is not whether an online review sounds enthusiastic; it is whether a particular camper, pickup arrangement and rental contract work for your party and route. This independent desk-based assessment compares the published offer with selected traveler reports and alternative fleets.
CampEasy is a credible option to shortlist for a road trip when you value an equipped camper, Keflavík pickup, published protection choices and a range from compact vans to F-road-designated 4×4 models. It is a poorer fit if you need an unrestricted cancellation deal, assume after-hours airport shuttles, or expect every 4×4 to safely ford rivers. Confirm the exact camper and booking terms before paying.
What CampEasy actually includes — and what it does not
On the current CampEasy booking/fleet page, the sample fleet listings describe bedding, cooking equipment, basic collision/theft protection, unlimited mileage and a nearby airport-transfer arrangement. The merchant FAQ also describes bedding and cooking essentials and confirms that extra fuel canisters or optional protection can be added. These are the supplier’s published descriptions, not verification that every item will be present in every unit at handover.
Published example vehicles; availability, layouts and assignment can change
| Example | Published seats / sleeps | Key question before selecting |
|---|---|---|
| Easy Small | 2 / 2; manual, front-wheel drive | Is the narrow sleeping surface comfortable for both travelers? |
| Easy Auto | 3 / 3; automatic, front-wheel drive | Does the sleeping layout work for three adults and their luggage? |
| Easy Clever 4×4 EXP | 3 / 3; automatic AWD | Is this exact class authorized for the roads in the itinerary? |
The word camper covers different living spaces. CampEasy lists the Easy Small sleeping area as 195 cm long but 115 cm at its widest torso section and 97 cm near the legs on the detailed model listing. That is a materially different nighttime experience from a wider three-person van. The merchant also reserves the right to provide a similar or higher class when the reserved type is unavailable; see its car-type substitution clause. A class listing is not a guarantee of an exact production-year unit or floor plan.
What travelers report about CampEasy
Public reviews are mainly favorable in the CampEasy Trustpilot listing, where individual October 2026 posts praise the helpful staff, the vehicle setup and assistance with questions. A May 2026 discussion among Iceland travelers contains several positive accounts and also notes that another operator may offer a better price for particular dates. These are voluntary reports, not a representative vehicle-reliability survey or our own driving test.
Not every experience is trouble-free. A detailed May 2026 three-star traveler review describes a cooking-hob issue, return visits to the depot and frustration about how the matter was handled. A May 2026 Tesla-camper trip report praised the service but described charging-app friction, restricted cooking space and difficulty making up the bed in bad weather. The Tesla report concerns that particular format; neither anecdote proves every CampEasy model shares those issues.
Treat praise for service as a reason to ask good questions, not a warranty. For a trip where cooking, mobility or heat is mission-critical, request the layout and handover instructions for the exact booked class, test appliances before leaving the depot when practical, and report faults immediately through the designated support channel.
The booking terms most likely to surprise renters
Cancellation is a fare choice, not a single promise
The CampEasy cancellation terms say the Fully Refundable option can be canceled without charge at least 24 hours before pickup; a Non-Refundable booking is not refundable after purchase. The same terms reserve unusually long refund processing in specified pandemic-lockdown or volcanic-eruption circumstances. Late no-shows and early returns have separate restrictions. Preserve your exact fare and written confirmation rather than relying on a general “free cancellation” banner.
Pickup and after-hours transport are different services
CampEasy’s pickup FAQ places pickup and return at its Keflavík office. The service terms describe the free KEF/Keflavík shuttle during staffed hours (published as 09:00–16:00), but the 24/7 self-service pickup terms explicitly say there is no shuttle and no staff for that mode. Complete the required online check-in and arrange your own transport for an overnight arrival or departure. Published check-in opening windows vary between FAQ sections, so follow the current instructions attached to the actual booking rather than assuming a fixed number of days.
Insurance is not the same as a zero-risk holiday
Included CDW still carries exposure. CampEasy’s insurance explanation details premium options and their deductibles; the rental agreement excludes or restricts certain circumstances, including closed roads and some water or vehicle-underbody damage. Asking whether an upgraded package reduces a deductible is different from asking whether the particular type of loss is covered. A credit/debit card in the booking name is required at pickup even if a deposit is not pre-authorized, according to the FAQ on cards.
If your plan relies on driving F-roads, do not translate a 4×4 badge into permission for any named route. The rental class, operator authorization, daily road closure notices and water-crossing policy are separate checks. The Iceland tourism authority’s road guide explains why highland travel differs from the normal Ring Road.
CampEasy versus another Iceland camper operator
A meaningful alternative is Happy Campers, whose published lineup includes two-person compact campers, larger automatic models and named 4×4 classes. KuKu Campers also rents 4WD camper classes but imposes specific F-road exclusions. This means an objective comparison should use the same travel dates, actual seats and beds, gearbox, permitted route, pickup time and damage terms; a homepage price comparison is not enough.
Who should shortlist which option — not a universal ranking
| Traveler priority | CampEasy fit | Alternative check |
|---|---|---|
| Equipped 2–3-person paved-road trip | Strong shortlist if a listed Easy Small/Auto layout fits | Compare equivalent Happy 1 or Happy 2 class and full checkout totals |
| A particular interior configuration or large sleeping surface | Fit depends on precise bed measurements, not headline berths | Ask other operators for bed dimensions and a confirmed class |
| An F-road and possible river itinerary | Review exact designated 4×4 and rental exclusions first | Check KuKu-specific road exclusions and consider a guided highland trip |
| Very late flight or contactless pickup | Possible self-service, but no staff/shuttle in that mode | Compare handover times, taxis and a first-night hotel |
Five checks before you book
- Choose a precise vehicle class and ask for belted seats, actual sleeping dimensions and transmission, not simply “sleeps three.”
- Save a copy of the chosen Fully Refundable or Non-Refundable conditions and note its 24-hour cancellation boundary.
- Confirm your KEF arrival time, staffed pickup or self-service mode, check-in deadline and return transport.
- Read the applicable insurance exclusions and deductibles; document any faults and contact the supplier while still on the trip.
- Budget for organized campsites; the Icelandic Environment Agency’s overnight rules do not permit routine campervan wild camping without the required permission.
When those checks align, CampEasy is a reasonable candidate. If they do not, the right choice may be another camper supplier, a conventional car with booked lodging, or a guided highland tour rather than a more expensive camper.
