A Bahamas cruise itinerary may include a public port, a cruise-line-controlled private island, or both. Those words are not interchangeable booking locations. Before comparing shore excursions, identify whether the stop is Nassau, Freeport/Grand Bahama, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Great Stirrup Cay, Castaway Cay or another named destination.

Short answer: port access comes before tour price

For Nassau and Freeport, compare shore excursions and independent transport against the ship’s schedule. For CocoCay, Great Stirrup Cay and Castaway Cay, start with your cruise line’s own activity catalogue and guest-access rules. A Nassau or Freeport marketplace listing does not prove outside operators can collect you on a private destination.

Nassau: a flexible downtown day or a connected boat day?

The Nassau Cruise Port transport guide identifies an arrivals-plaza taxi stand, local buses and ferry links. A short urban visit can therefore be planned quite differently from a snorkel boat, beach club or island outing that depends on timed pickup. None of those options is automatically better; the point is whether each added transfer earns its place in the itinerary.

The SEG Nassau catalogue contains city sightseeing, beach and marine excursions with varying departure points and inclusions. For a low-friction Nassau day, verify how quickly you can get back to the ship. For a marine outing, ask who determines cancellation if local sea conditions are unsuitable while the ship still calls.

Freeport: treat the transfer as part of the product

Grand Bahama activity locations can require a separate ride. The SEG Taino Beach Resort Day Pass currently describes a taxi transfer that is not included, with the stated travel time and taxi estimate varying by location and party size. That changes both cost and the ability to return. It is more useful to ask “what is our door-to-door plan?” than whether a five-hour pass sounds convenient.

  • Ask whether the advertised duration includes transfer time or only admission/activity time.
  • Confirm port pickup, quoted taxi fare for the entire group and a confirmed ride back.
  • Check whether loungers, meals, equipment and any beach access are bundled.
  • For a water activity, compare the exact weather-cancellation terms with the ship-missed-port rule.

Private islands: different rules, different sellers

Perfect Day at CocoCay

Royal Caribbean states that Perfect Day at CocoCay is available to Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise guests. Its guest guidance points to the Royal Caribbean app or My Royal Cruise for cabana reservations. A pier and beach access do not imply that an independently listed Nassau tour operates here. Confirm your ship-specific included amenities and add-ons in the correct booking interface.

Great Stirrup Cay — check the newer activity catalogue

Norwegian describes Great Stirrup Cay as exclusive to NCL guests and distinguishes included beach/dining amenities from paid extras. Its published 2026 information explains that Great Tides Waterpark and other shore activities appear in NCL’s excursion system. NCL specifies that booked guests use MyNCL for advance waterpark reservations, subject to availability. Do not assume an old general “private island = just a beach day” guide captures these changes.

Disney Castaway Cay

Disney describes Castaway Cay as exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests and sells curated Port Adventures for the stop. Its guest FAQ distinguishes included beaches and services from bookable experiences. Consult the current cruise reservation rather than using a Nassau listing as a substitute.

Booking mismatch to avoid

A Bahamas region filter on a marketplace can lead to valid Nassau or Freeport products. That does not establish delivery at CocoCay, Great Stirrup Cay or Castaway Cay. Never pay a deposit until the product names your actual stop and confirms the permitted meeting location.

A two-minute pre-booking test

  • Read the port/destination name directly from your cruise confirmation.
  • Identify who controls access to the excursion: open public port or cruise-line private guest area.
  • For Nassau and Freeport, compare excursion departure place, ground/boat transfers and guaranteed return terms.
  • For private destinations, sign into your cruise line’s itinerary-specific booking catalogue first.
  • Write down what is included and what costs extra; recheck availability close to departure.
