Quick answer
Private shore excursions are not automatically better than small-group tours. Private becomes more attractive when your party values route control, privacy, accessibility coordination, a specific pickup plan or enough seats to spread a fixed group price. Small-group tours often make more sense when you want lower per-person cost and do not need a custom itinerary. Compare the total party cost, not just the per-person headline.

Private, small-group and custom are different products
A “private” excursion normally means your party is not combined with unrelated guests. It does not automatically mean every route, departure time or attraction can be changed. A “small-group” excursion limits the number of participants but still operates as a shared tour. A custom excursion is a separate level of planning where the itinerary itself may be developed around the group.
Shore Excursions Group currently makes this distinction on its group page: standard/shared options, private excursions and separately quoted custom excursions. Its current page says custom pricing typically starts materially above standard/private products, so treat customization as a separate purchase decision rather than assuming it comes free with the word “private.”
Private vs small-group shore excursions
| Decision factor | Private | Small group |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | Your party only | Shared with other travelers |
| Route flexibility | Potentially higher, but listing/operator rules still apply | Usually follows a fixed itinerary |
| Per-person economics | Can improve as party size grows when pricing is partly group-based | Often stronger for one or two travelers |
| Pickup coordination | Can be simpler for one party if explicitly included | May involve a shared meeting point and group assembly |
| Accessibility planning | Can make vehicle/transfer requirements easier to coordinate, but only if confirmed | May work well when the specific vehicle and route are accessible; do not assume |
| Social atmosphere | More private | Can be more social and often less expensive |
| Cancellation exposure | A larger portion of the party’s budget may sit in one booking | Lower total commitment for small parties in many cases |
Use a party-size worksheet instead of a slogan
The right comparison is:
Private total cost ÷ number of travelers = private effective cost per person
Small-group price per person × number of travelers = small-group total party cost
Then add anything that one option includes and the other does not: port transfer, guide, admissions, child seats, equipment, meals or a separate vehicle.
| Worksheet item | Private option | Small-group option |
|---|---|---|
| Base tour price | _____ | _____ |
| Number of travelers | _____ | _____ |
| Port transfer | Included / extra / unclear | Included / extra / unclear |
| Admission tickets | Included / extra / unclear | Included / extra / unclear |
| Meals | Included / extra / unclear | Included / extra / unclear |
| Child seat / mobility equipment | Included / extra / unavailable | Included / extra / unavailable |
| Total party cost | _____ | _____ |
| Effective cost per person | _____ | _____ |
Do not compare two unlike inclusions
A private tour that includes the vehicle, guide and attraction entry is not directly comparable with a cheaper shared listing that excludes admissions or requires a separate transfer. Normalize the package before calculating a break-even point.
Private can help coordination—but it does not create accessibility
A private vehicle may make it easier to coordinate a wheelchair, scooter, child seat, slower walking pace or transfer assistance. But “private” is not an accessibility standard. The specific vehicle, ramp/lift, securement, doorway dimensions, transfer requirements and attraction route still need confirmation.
The same is true for families. A private tour may reduce waiting and make nap/meal timing easier, but only if the operator actually allows the flexibility you expect.
Private is not automatically custom
Shore Excursions Group currently lists nearly 1,000 private excursions on its group page and separately describes custom group excursions. Its page says custom excursions are quoted as a premium product and that pricing typically starts 75% above standard excursions. Because that commercial term is volatile, verify it again if the premium materially affects your decision.
The more important lesson is durable: before paying extra for a private tour, ask exactly what you can change. Route? Departure time? Duration? Attraction sequence? Meal stop? Pickup location? If the answer is “the itinerary is fixed,” you are buying privacy and possibly vehicle control—not a fully bespoke day.
How to compare private and small-group options on Shore Excursions Group
SEG currently labels excursion size on individual listings and maintains separate private/group inventory. Use the listing-level facts, not the format name alone. Price, capacity and vehicle details can move substantially with party size.
Run the party-size math before paying for privacy
Compare the same port, similar duration and equivalent inclusions. Then decide whether privacy, vehicle control or customization is worth the difference for your group.
Questions to ask before booking either format
- Is the quoted price per person or for the whole vehicle/group?
- What is the maximum group size?
- Does “private” mean only my party, or is the itinerary also customizable?
- Is pickup at the ship, terminal, terminal exit or another meeting point?
- Are guide, admissions, food and transport included?
- Can the vehicle accommodate child seats, wheelchair/scooter or other equipment if needed?
- What walking, steps and transfer ability are required?
- What is the cancellation exposure for the full party booking?
- What time does the tour plan to return to the ship area?

This comparison was checked September 20, 2026 against Shore Excursions Group’s current group/private/custom excursion information and live excursion listings. Current commercial terms include a stated premium for custom work and a large private inventory; both are volatile. Re-check price, capacity, customization and vehicle details on the specific listing.
